Dios (Sibö)
Sibö, canta y danza sus enseñanzas (Pintor brunca, Melvin Gonzalez Rojas, Kamel)

Sibö, the great spirit of the Bribris, is the sower and the central figure of their spiritual tradition in the Bribris Clans of Talamanca, Costa Rica. His history and teachings make up a pre-Hispanic monotheistic theology that encompasses the worldview, theogony, and anthropogony of this ancestral culture.

From the beginning, Sibö has been the creator and bearer of indigenous wisdom, values and customs. Through his teachings, the Bribris learned what products to grow, how to plant, and how to structure their society into clans with a defined morality. Likewise, Sibö gave the Awápa, the Bribri shamans, the ritual songs, the sacred language and the magic stones.

It is also said that Sibö's wife is Tsuru, the cacao, and that the flowers of this plant represent his colorful clothes. Sibö is described as omnipotent and omnipresent, speaking all languages and constantly fighting the devils that try to finish him off. His role as an indigenous civilizer and mythical figure makes him a revered deity.

In the bribris vision, the world of Suré, behind the sun, is the intense and full reality, while the Earth is only a reflection and a shadow of that reality. Sibö and Surá, the god of the subsoil, are in charge of maintaining balance and creating new cycles through disintegration and recreation.

Sibö protects the eastern and western gates, preventing evils and disasters from entering the underworld. Together with the Awápa, she is in charge of driving away evil spirits and performing healing rituals for the community. Likewise, she watches over the safety of the people at the door where the sun goes down, protecting them from the Owner of the Serpents and his deadly hunt.

In summary, the history and teachings of Sibö make up a complete vision of the bribris world, which ranges from the ethics of social coexistence and ecology to the political hierarchy and the perception of the universe. The ancestral wisdom transmitted by Sibö has shaped the Bribri culture and continues to be a source of inspiration and spiritual guidance for his people. Immerse yourself in the richness of this monotheistic theology and discover how the word of Sibö lives on as a sacred legacy in the Bribris culture.
